Let's Play!
The Boys & Girls Club of Snohomish County – Tulalip Unit was given the opportunity to build a new playground for their community. Planning for the playground began five years ago by clearing out blackberry bushes, planting grass and putting up a cyclone fence. In January 2008, the Club was approached by the Tulalip TERO Department and Home Depot with funding for this project. The Club was then contacted by KaBOOM!, a non-profit company based in Washington, D.C. that empowers communities to build playgrounds.
A representative from KaBOOM! and approximately 25 community members and Club youth all met or teleconferenced weekly from March through November. The community was a huge supporter of the initiative. The playground project had a "Design Day" on September 12, during which the youth designed their dream playground and dug all the holes. Bobby Engram, Wide Receiver for the Seattle Seahawks was chosen to come help build. Along with over 200 volunteers, the playground was built on November 11. Volunteers represented:
- The Home Depot
- Tulalip TERO
- Tulalip Lions Club
- Tulalip Montessori School
- Tulalip Elementary School
- Tulalip Boys & Girls Club
- Reporters from every local news and radio station
- Tulalip Tribal entities
- Community members
The Boys & Girls Club was a swarm of bodies starting at 6:00 a.m. and the project was completed by 2:30 p.m. Diane Prouty, who works for the Tulalip Club said that it was “a great privilege to work with such big-hearted people on such a worthwhile project for our youth.”
