Volunteer Housing
Project
In 2004, t he SuAnne Big Crow Boys & Girls Club
received a $100,000 contribution from New York businessman
Richard Fields, for the construction of housing quarters for
the AmeriCorp National Community Civilian Corp (NCCC) volunteers,
a Corporation for National and Community Service program.
The Club utilizes these essential volunteers to implement
programs in the newly constructed $6.5 million Boys &
Girls Club facility. Volunteer quarters are necessary to continue
this incredible service program. One of the Clubs greatest
challenges has been securing a residential facility for the
volunteers. The new facility eliminates the huge task
of coordinating the NCCC program - the Club no longer
has to rent space for volunteers or rely on other community
organizations to donate lodging. The facility is a 2,000
square foot modular unit and includes two dorm sleeping areas,
team leader quarters, kitchen and dining area, bathrooms
and a day room.
The NCCC program has maintained a strong presence on the Pine
Ridge Reservation over the last three years. Their motto is
Getting Things Done and they have continuously
lived up to their pledge. SuAnne Big Crow Boys & Girls
Club has hosted 14 teams, totaling 140 AmeriCorps members.
The Club has received 30 months of volunteer services that
includes nearly 34,000 hours of service, contributing $250,000
in Club staffing. What has the impact been of the NCCC Program?
NCCC volunteers have coordinated and implemented
a variety of programs and projects within the Club such as:
PowerUP; Job Ready; Smart Moves; Street Smart; G.R.E.A.T.
(Gang Resistance Education and Training; Gang Prevention Program
Targeted Outreach; Career Explorers; Athletic Leagues; Power
Hour; Ready Set Read; Karate; Photography; and the Boys &
Girls Club Radio Show.
The involvement of the NCCC volunteers
has impacted the Pine Ridge community as well. Volunteer teams
have provided tutoring for four local elementary schools;
participated in two Habitat Build projects, Community Clean
Up projects, and Community Youth Dances; volunteered as chaperones;
provided service to Elderly, delivered blankets and medicine;
and renovated and cleaned up volunteer quarters.
