Boys & Girls Clubs Mark National Mentoring Month
Who has been a mentor in your life? It may have been a teacher, coach, family member, or even a Boys & Girls Club professional. January is National Mentoring Month, and as such, National Native American Mentoring Program sites are honoring those who serve as mentors.
In Washington, participants at the Boys & Girls Clubs of IWASIL attended National Mentoring Night with the Seattle Sonics on January 28th. Local dignitaries spoke about how mentoring has influenced their lives and Lt. Governor Brad Owen and United Way of King County CEO Jon Fine presented the Outstanding Mentor of the Year Award.
Representatives from Boys & Girls Clubs of the Dinè Nation and Boys & Girls Clubs of the East Valley in Arizona took part in Governor Janet Napolitano’s January 25th Mentoring Celebration hosted by the Governor’s Commission on Service and Volunteerism. Dr. Susan Weinberger, a National Native American Mentoring Program partner presented the Keynote Address.
Boys & Girls Clubs of the Three Affiliated Tribes program members traveled to their State Capitol in Bismarck, North Dakota to participate in Thank Your Mentor Day. Governor Hoeven proclaimed January 25th "North Dakota's Thank Your Mentor Day," which coincides with a national observance of the same name. First Lady Mikey Hoeven presided over the Governor’s Mentoring Award Ceremony immediately following.
Other Clubs held open houses and dinners in an effort to raise awareness and increase participation in the mentoring program. Mentors were also honored at special events to celebrate the theme of National Mentoring Month: Share What You Know…Become a Mentor.
