Red Lake Celebrates Opening of Club
On June 5, the Red Lake Nation celebrated the opening of their new Boys & Girls Club building. The community marked the event with honor songs, speeches, and a feast. Guests and speakers included Red Lake Chairman Floyd “Buck” Jourdain, Jr. and Ernie Stevens, Jr., Chair of the National Indian Gaming Association.
The Red Lake Nation Boys & Girls Club opened in 2001 and was previously located in the elementary and middle schools. Many organizations came together to provide the resources needed to build the youth a separate space on the reservation. Funding came from the Red Lake Nation Tribal Council, Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, HUD ICDBG grants, Mardag Foundation, Best Buy Corporation, and the Bush Foundation.
The Club design includes reflections of Anishinaabe cultural heritage. The building entrance is to the east and the circular central lobby of the building is painted in the colors of the Medicine Wheel. It is adjacent to the Pow Wow grounds and looks out over the lake which is the namesake of the community. The new building includes an arts and crafts room, Tech Center, Teen Center, gymnasium, and theater. A second Club building is located in Ponemah. Together the Clubs serve over 350 youth.
