Congratulations to the 2008-2009 T.R.A.I.L. Grantees

Thirty-five Native American Boys & Girls Clubs have been awarded funding for the 2008-2009 T.R.A.I.L. program year.  The Indian Health Service (IHS), National Congress of American Indians (NCAI), Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) and Nike, Inc. have partnered to continue On the T.R.A.I.L. (Together Raising Awareness for Indian Life) to Diabetes Prevention.   The program is aimed at reducing the onset of diabetes among Native American youth through an innovative combination of physical, educational and nutritional activities that promote healthy lifestyles.

Members draw from Tribal traditions and history to learn about nutrition, food choices and the impact of diabetes.  They then apply decision-making and goal-setting skills to plan a service project to improve healthy lifestyles in their communities.  Woven throughout the program are self-esteem and prevention activities; community and family involvement is encouraged.

Included in the partnership is a Nike Let Me Play on Native Lands equipment grant that includes physical activity training, curriculum, and equipment.  Nike Let Me Play on Native Lands motivates T.R.A.I.L. and Club members to achieve their goals and promotes physical activity.

The T.R.A.I.L. grantees participated in a 3-day training in Cabazon, CA in October 2008.  During the training, Club leaders were introduced to the T.R.A.I.L. program and Nike Let Me Play activities.  Returning sites shared best practices for program implementation.
