On the T.R.A.I.L. - Creating a Leader
The following is a story written by Tresa Tate, Program Director
at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Green Country in Pryor, Oklahoma.
It tells a story of how the Diabetes Prevention program, created
by a partnership of the National Congress of American Indians
(NCAI); Indian Health Service (IHS); Boys & Girls Clubs
of America (BGCA); and NIKE, Inc., has changed a life of a
young member whose family has suffered from Diabetes.
Danny is a 13-year old boy who has overcome
many obstacles in his short life. The Boys & Girls Club
of Green Country first met Danny when he was nine years old.
He would come to the Club with a smile on his face and he
would do dances for us, he loved the group N'SYNC. We knew
he needed a place to be safe and we welcomed him into our
Boys & Girls Club family.
Years have passed and Danny is now a teenager. He has an
old red Boys & Girls Club shirt he found at our local
mission and wears it as much as possible. He was chosen by
Chelsea Masterson, a staff member at the BGCGC Roosevelt Unit,
to help with the NikeGo program and the T.R.A.I.L. program
as a Peer Leader. He works great with the kids as he is full
of encouragement, energy, and has the desire to help our staff
and other Club members. Danny has a very personal story concerning
the T.R.A.I.L. Diabetes Prevention program. His mother died
from diabetes when he was nine years old - about the same
time he became a Club member.
We have chosen Danny Stewart for "The NikeGo Peer Leader
of the Month." Danny will receive several Nike products
and a certificate of appreciation. We are so proud of all
of his work and would like to thank Nike for the awards he
will receive, and Boys & Girls Clubs of Green Country
Staff for providing Danny with support and encouragement!
Good Job Danny!!!!
