Mr. Cody Goes to Washington
If you were in the Boys & Girls Club of Green Country
in Pryor, Oklahoma in early January, you definitely knew about
Cody Buff's trip to Washington DC. The 15-year old Club member
was so excited about his upcoming trip, he crammed the Club
with signs that counted down the days to his departure. According
to his chaperone and Area Director of Boys & Girls Clubs
of Green Country, Mike Turtle, "Cody Buff Goes to DC
on January 19," signs even appeared in the restroom!
The purpose of the journey was to attend
the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
(SAMSHA) sponsored Faith and Community Summit where Cody was
presented with an Outstanding Youth Leadership award. He was
nominated for the national award by the Club for his many
accomplishments in his community, church and the Boys &
Girls Club. The 4-year Club member and honor roll student has held many leadership
roles including War Council Keystone Member, SMART Moves Peer
Leader, Junior Staff, and Former Torch Club President. Cody
is very active in his church and serves as a volunteer for
many community projects and school fundraising events. Rumor
has it that the mayor of Pryor keeps Cody's number in his
rolodex and calls to confirm community meeting times with
the responsible young man!
Mike Turtle learned a lot about Cody during
their travels and became truly impressed with him. "Cody
collected lots of educational and anti-drug information at
the Summit that he plans to share with the Club," Mike
detailed. "He is so committed to everything on his plate.
I am honored to know him - he is the type of person you wish
everyone could be like."
According to Club staff, Cody has a very
supportive family and his fellow Club members are extremely
proud of him. "We would not be surprised to see him as
an elected official someday," Mike surmised. Keep up
the good work, Cody!
