Carter's Clothing Shipped to Native American Communities
Recently, Joe Cordova, President of Boys
& Girls Clubs of Greater Fort Worth, received a generous
contribution of exquisite children's clothing from Carter's,
Inc. Joe was anxious to share his good fortune with Native
American Boys & Girls Clubs and contacted BGCA Senior
Vice President Robbie Callaway for guidance with such an endeavor.
Immediately, the wheels were set in motion and the clothes
were delivered to FirstPic, Inc. for distribution.
Because of BGCA's keen interest in strengthening relationships
with federal and local IHS and Head Start programs, plans
to distribute the clothing through a partnership with the
local Clubs and Head Start programs, were put in place. Native
American Clubs with Early Head Start and/or Head Start programs
located within or near their tribal community were identified.
Eighty five boxes were shipped to Clubs containing
over 4,500 pieces of brand new children's clothes with an
estimated value of $200,000! Forty-seven Native American Boys
& Girls Club organizations will partner with 74 local
Early Head Start and Head Start programs and organize a variety
of events and activities to distribute the clothes to local
children.
Such a goodwill gesture is an excellent community service
project, enhances public relations efforts, fosters outreach
for Club membership, and develops an important community health
partner. Currently, IHS is playing a key role in funding a
National diabetes prevention program with 6 Native American
Boys & Girls pilot Club sites. IHS is invested in this
initiative and hopes to expand funding to reach more than
25 Club sites in 2004. Local Head Start programs are seen
as exemplary Club partners as the children are readily viewed
as future Club members!
