About AmeriCorps and VISTA
AmeriCorps is a network of local, state and national service programs that engages more than
70,000 Americans each year with service at more than 2,000 nonprofits, public agencies and faithbased
and community organizations.
VISTA is the AmeriCorps program that especially focuses on alleviating poverty through indirect,
capacity building service. VISTA members often work behind the scenes in a leadership role to
empower their agencies with new programs, increased ability to aid clients and greater reach to
improve the causes and conditions of poverty.
About the Partnership
The partnership is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service and administered
by Boys & Girls Clubs in Indian Country, Inc. The pilot effort began in March 2010 with the
recruitment of 10 full-time volunteer employees for Boys & Girls Club sites in the Southwest Region.
The pilot service year will run from summer 2010 to summer 2011. Anticipated expansion of
the program to sites across the country will occur in the next three to five years.
Goals of the VISTA program:
• Develop and expand services to bring people out of poverty.
• Build the capacity of individuals, organizations and communities.
• Create long-term sustainable change.
Members receive a post-service education award of $5,350 or end of service stipend of
$1,500, a living stipend, health and dental coverage, relocation allowance and travel to pre-service
orientation, non-competitive eligibility for federal employment following the year of full-time service,
eligibility for student loan forbearance/deferment, and a wealth of new skills in exchange for their
service.
