Bismarck Regional Native Clubs Gathering

Welcome! This Web page is a resource for participants of the 2014 Bismarck Regional Native Clubs Gathering, including Club staff, board members, and/or Tribal leaders. It has information that was shared during the gathering in Bismarck, ND from August 26-27, 2014.

Leaders from Native Boys & Girls Clubs across six upper Midwest states gathered together for the first of five regional cluster trainings. Over 80 participants from sixteen organizations joined together to teach, learn, and interact with other professionals from Native Clubs and Sites.

Participants were able to sustain and respect each community’s unique cultural values, traditions, and ways while building upon the vision of the Native Services Unit (NSU) and practicing integral concepts of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) movement. The event offered programmatic and leadership sessions on topics such as infusing culture into healthy lifestyles, academic success and good character/citizenship, using NYOI to effectively tell your story, resource development basics, federal grants management, human resource basics, serving teens with impact, board development basics, and dialogues on challenges.

2015 Native Summit

Welcome! This page serves as a resource for participants of the 2015 Native Summit, including Club staff, board members, and/or Tribal Leaders. It has information that was shared during the Summit at the Buffalo Thunder Resort, located in Santa Fe, NM from March 24-26, 2015.

Hosted by the Pueblo of Pojoaque, nearly 240 Boys & Girls Club professionals, Tribal Leaders and Boys & Girls Clubs in Indian Country partners gathered to work together to strengthen and sustain Boys & Girls Clubs for years to come.

The event was filled with informational breakout sessions designed to fit the needs of each and every Native organization and site. It is recognized that even as Clubs have many similarities, they also have many differences. By offering various sessions, leaders and professionals of all backgrounds were able to participate in meaningful learning experiences that were applicable to their daily lives.

Boys & Girls Clubs in Indian Country (BGCIC) have served American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian youth for more than 23 years. Since 1992, BGCA has served as a catalyst to bring together communities, tribal and federal governments and corporate and non-profit organizations.

Today, BGCA continues its pledge to assist communities and expand youth development in Indian Country. The Native Youth Services Unit provides additional support and specifically addresses the needs of Clubs on Native lands. The NSU has been, and continues to be, an integral component of the success and development of Native Clubs.

2015 Regional Learning Events

Welcome! Below you will find resources that were presented at the 2015 Regional Learning Events that were held in Atlanta, GA; Lewiston, ID; Catoosa, OK; and Chandler, AZ. Over 185 professionals comprised of Club staff, leadership, and board members from a total of 42 Native Boys & Girls Clubs gathered together for the four regional cluster trainings. This inaugural set of Learning Events provided opportunities for Club youth development professionals to network with others in their region, and to learn strategies and techniques to better serve the youth in their communities.

Each event was filled with informational breakout sessions designed to fit the needs of each and every Native organization and site. It is recognized that even as Clubs have many similarities, they also have many differences. By offering a diverse range of sessions, professionals of all backgrounds were able to participate in meaningful learning experiences that were applicable to their daily lives. Participants were able to sustain and respect each community’s unique cultural values, traditions, and ways while building upon the shared vision of the Native Services Unit (NSU) and practicing integral concepts of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) movement. The event offered programmatic and grant administration sessions on topics such as planning for safety, managing federal grants, working with teens, infusing cultural values into programming, dealing with conflict, developing resiliency in youth, and learning effective Club leadership.

Through these Regional Learning Events and other initiatives, the Native Youth Services Unit provides support and specifically addresses the needs of Clubs on Native lands. The NSU has been, and continues to be, an integral component of the success and development of Native Clubs.

2013 Native Summit

Welcome! This Web page is a resource for participants of the 2013 Native Summit, including Club staff, board members, and/or tribal council members. It has all the information, and more, that was shared during the Summit at the Talking Stick Resort, located in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community in Scottsdale, AZ from November 11-13, 2013.

For the first time since 2007, professionals and tribal leaders from Clubs on Native lands gathered to learn, share, and deepen relationships. The Summit was designed to provide leaders from Native communities with the tools to strengthen and sustain those Boys & Girls Clubs for years to come.

BGCIC have served American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian youth for more than 20 years, celebrating the 20th anniversary in 2012. Since 1992, BGCA has served as a catalyst to bring together communities, tribal and federal governments and corporate and non-profit organizations.

Today, BGCA continues its pledge to assist communities and expand youth development in Indian Country. In 2013, BGCA created the Native Youth Services Unit, designed to provide additional support and specifically address the needs of Clubs on Native lands.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Native Youth Services Team
  • Teresa Walch, National Vice President
  • Brian Yazzie, National Director
  • Carla Knapp, Director of Development
  • Mike Marnin, Director of Development

By building upon a proven youth development model that has evolved over 150 years, BGCA is committed to addressing the problems and issues unique to Native communities – rural locations, high poverty rates, and shortage of trained youth professionals. They have contributed over $70 million in federal funds for Native Clubs, produced support materials along with customized training, and are especially proud of several special initiatives and projects in Clubs on Native lands.

BGCA offers a working plan for long-term sustainability, a matter critical to Indian Country. This approach includes continuous national and local fund-raising efforts, as well as thorough Club planning and safety guidelines to ensure Clubs offer positive alternatives for their youth for years to come.
