2017 Native Spirit Award Winners

During the 2017 Native Summit in Ft. Myers, Florida, regional and national Native Spirit Award Winners were announced. The Native Spirit Award is the most prestigious honor Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Native Services Unit presents to Club staff. It recognizes an individual in each region who most exemplifies service to members and their families, passion and commitment to their work, creativity and imagination, and support of the community.

Nominations for the award are submitted by Club Executives. From there the judges select a winner at each regional Native Learning Event where they receive $250 for themselves and $250 for their Club. Out of the group of regional winners, BGCA staff selects one nominee as a National winner. National winners then receive $500 for themselves and $500 for the Club. Regional winners were Fenton Jones from the Boys & Girls Club of the Penobscot Nation, Shelly Davis from the Boys & Girls Club of Chelsea, Candice Leapley from the Boys & Girls Club of Bay Mills, Angela DiCicco from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale, and Sesilynn Schleusener from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southcentral Alaska. Congratulations to all of the regional Native Sprit Award Winners!

The National Award winner was announced for the first time at the Summit taking the winner completely by surprise. This year’s winner was Angela DiCicco from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale. BGCA staff felt that Angela exemplified everything that the Native Spirit Award represents. Angela graciously accepted the award at the Summit and gave a short speech of how thankful she was for the award as well as how happy she was to be a part of the Movement. She plans on continuing her hard word and exceptional efforts in her community for many years to come and for that BGCA staff is very grateful. A special congratulation to Angela and all of the work she puts in for the Club kids in her Club and community!
