The Future is Now

Amazing, uplifting, empowering- these are only a few of the many words that can be used to describe the impact of the 2015 Native Summit that took place in Santa Fe, NM at the Buffalo Thunder Resort. The Boys & Girls Club of the Pueblo of Pojoaque, lead by Chief Professional Officer (CPO) Don Christy, graciously hosted over two hundred forty Club professionals, Tribal Leaders, and Boys & Girls Clubs in Indian Country partners for an unforgettable event.

In the time spent at the Summit, attendees were able to attend a variety of sessions that that were designed to deepen the impact of both Native Clubs and traditional Clubs with Native sites. Breakout sessions were included in the agenda to ensure Club professional from all backgrounds were able to participate in a meaningful learning experience that can be implemented back in their communities.

Sharing tradition and culture were important components of the conference. Christy and the Club invited conference attendees to a traditional feast day celebration and tour of the local Teen Center. The celebration included youth dance groups from the Pueblo of Pojoaque and the Boys & Girls Club of Ohkay Owingeh. Community members banded together to provided dishes, flatware, and delicious food dishes that are traditional to their area. It came to no surprise that Christy received the Native Service to Youth Award for his dedication and hard work that he has demonstrated throughout the year to improve the lives of all youth his Club serves.

The Native Services Unit and their staff along with Christy and his staff collaborated together to create an event that will be everlasting in the memory all of who were in attendance.
