Native Clubs Experience Success with Robotics Programs

The Boys & Girls Club of Gallup in New Mexico recently announced that they will once again take part in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics competition. The event involves over 71,000 students showcasing their best robotic design and construction skills through team robots competing in a challenge that is unique to each annual competition. Participants bring their best skills in hopes to win scholarships sponsored by NASA!

The Club’s robotics program has not only inspired Club members but community members as well! According to the team coordinator, the Club has witnessed a greater interest in the program as well as the area of study from local schools, businesses, and media because of team and community involvement and demonstrations. Club team members are busy working hard to ensure even more success this year!

The Boys & Girls Club of Tahlequah in Oklahoma has also experienced success with robotics. This year, five teams from the Club qualified for the Oklahoma State VEX IQ tournament. For this competition, teams had to build a robot according to the VEX IQ platform to solve an engineering problem that was presented in the form of a game. The challenge also incorporated a STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) based research project that included a written or media presentation.

Club members that were part of three teams brought several awards back to share with the Club. Not only did they achieve the STEM Research and Robotics Skills Award and the Excellence Award, but they were also crowned OK State Champions! The award winning teams qualified for the 2014 VEX Robotic World Championship VEX IQ Challenge presented by Northrop Grumman Foundation in Anaheim, CA!
