Native Club Wins Alaska Club of the Year

In a small village of about 800 people on Prince Wales Island in Alaska, you will find the Boys & Girls Club of Klawock. Most of the island’s people are of Tlingit Haida descent. And although the Club is located in a small community, they are doing big things; including winning this year’s prestigious Alaska Club of the Year Award!

The Club is very active in the Klawock community, and this year they hosted and participated in a variety of activities for youth; including hosting the 14th Annual Prince of Wales Island International Marathon and Half Marathon, a basketball camp, sleepovers, pool days, various sports, concerts, spelling bees, and science fairs. Basketball is a favorite among youth at the Klawock Club; the high school’s basketball team won the state championship this year! A highlight for fans of basketball was when Prince of Wales Island Alaska Native Damen Bell-Holter, player for the NBA Boston Celtics, was a guest speaker at the Club.

Several “open mic” nights also took place where Club members could sing, play an instrument, act, perform stand-up comedy, or perform a magic show. In May 2013, the Club made state headlines by hosting a competition for the annual Native Youth Olympic Games (NYO). Middle and high school aged youth from all over Prince of Wales Island visited the Club for a chance to qualify for the NYO in Anchorage, AK.

In addition to having fun, youth at the Klawock Club are excelling in school. All students that attended Power Hour made the honor roll or high honor roll at their schools! Joseph Yates, the Club’s Unit Director, is very proud of the Club and its members, stating, “I am so proud of all these kids and someday you will be reading about one of them in the youth of the year [Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Youth of the Year] one of these years.”

Congratulations on winning Alaska Club of the Year, Boys & Girls Club of Klawock! For more information about the Club, visit their Facebook page or contact Joseph Yates at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .
