Penobscot Boys & Girls Club Leader Receives Maytag Award

For the past three years, Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) and one of their partners, Maytag, has been honoring dependable leaders throughout the BGCA movement with the Maytag Dependable Leader Award. Recipients of the award are given a $20,000 check for their Club, as well as a plaque. This year, one of Boys & Girls Clubs in Indian Country’s (BGCIC) greatest leaders, Carla Knapp of the Penobscot Boys & Girls Club (PBGC), received the award.

Carla, an enrolled member of the Penobscot Nation, served as Chief Professional Officer (CPO) of the PBGC for 13 years. During her tenure as CPO, Carla brought the Club from being a unit with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Waterville to its own organization, and later took on other units on Native lands in Maine. In 2013, she was promoted to serve with BGCA’s Native American Service Unit to assist other Clubs on Native lands across the country.

Of the award, Carla said, “I was extremely surprised and honored to receive this award. It was such an amazing gift to be able to leave to the PBGC as I had been with the organization for 13 years. As I move on to my new role with BGCA I will always remember my time with the organization and the youth involved.”

Congratulations, Carla!
