PeaceJam Partners with Boys & Girls Club to Build Good Citizens

Colorado is the home for PeaceJam, a youth leadership program that encourages and motivates youth to work towards common goals. Participating Club members from the Boys & Girls Club of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe (BGC SUIT) work on a variety of projects for the community of Ignacio, CO. The PeaceJam group worked on a Keep Tobacco Sacred project with the Lasso Tobacco Coalition to teach Club members about keeping tobacco sacred and the harmfulness of second-hand smoke. This project lead to the production of a film, called Keeping it Sacred, which was been shown three times during the 2012. Youth involved in the production were interviewed by the audience. This was a very inspirational activity for the youth and brought more public awareness to the Club.

Boys & Girls Clubs in Indian Country AmeriCorps*VISTA member, Christina Nielsen, had the opportunity to work on behalf of the Club’s PeaceJam group and help them enter the film into the festival. She also helped create and organize a group to make music for Keeping it Sacred. Christina has been serving as a VISTA member with the BGC SUIT since November 2012.

PeaceJam members value their community. They build skills in filmmaking, photography, and leadership through classes, workshops, and youth conferences. PeaceJammers work to inform their community of things that affect them. They work with the local police department and hope to create a positive place where youth and community members can feel valued and safe. More information about the PeaceJam at the Club, and in general, can be found here: http://www.bgcsu.org/programs/peacejam.
