AmeriCorps*VISTA Summer Associates

Between each school year, youth, especially those in low-income neighborhoods, are falling up to three grade levels behind in reading and math. Such losses in education can be attributed to unavailable nutrition in addition to insufficient educational opportunities during the summer months.

Boys & Girls Clubs in Indian Country (BGCIC) and AmeriCorps*VISTA are working hard to protect Club members this summer through the BGCIC AmeriCorps*VISTA project and the placement of Summer Associates. In 11 Native Boys & Girls Clubs across the country, Summer Associates are lending a hand through both direct service and capacity building projects to aid either summer learning loss prevention programs or the USDA Summer Food Service Program. Some even help with both learning and nutrition initiatives!

Since 2010, 74 Summer Associates have served to help better the life for Club members. The Associates are local recruits that serve within their communities for 10 weeks. These individuals are placed as volunteers in service to assist existing programs in order to provide opportunities to engage disadvantaged youth while working to overcome poverty. Associates help lift local youth out of poverty by creating community leaders and employees of the future, and introducing youth to positive lifestyle choices that will make them productive, healthy members of society.

Do you not have a Summer Associate at your Club but you would like to help work against summer learning loss? No problem. Boys & Girls Clubs of America is pleased to announce an exciting, interactive learning program called Summer Brain Gain that is geared toward a summer of fun spent at your Club! In 2014, the program introduced a new component called Summer Brain Gain-Read! which is a literacy program that can be implemented with summer curriculum. Register your Club today and begin your summer of learning for fun!
