World Habitat Day – Reflecting on Our Impact

World Habitat Day is celebrated every year all across the world on the first Monday of October. It is celebrated in many countries including Pakistan, Germany, Hungary, United States, Brazil, Belgium, Japan, Italy, Indonesia, Mexico, China, Kenya, Jamaica, the Netherlands, Senegal, and more. World Habitat Day was first declared by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in December of 1985. Each year since, it takes on a new theme to bring attention to UN-Habitat’s mandate to promote awareness of our joint responsibility to positively shape the world for future generations. Every one of us deserves the opportunity for a better future.

As part of the Boys & Girls Clubs’ vision to build great character and citizenship, local Clubs have the opportunity to engage youth by reflecting on our environmental impact, especially after the recent hurricanes. Teaching youth they can be good stewards of the Earth is one of the best ways for them to become stakeholders in their communities. Explore what Club members think are harmful to their communities, and allow them to examine how their actions contribute to them. Together, develop a community-wide initiative to bring awareness and preserve the Club and community.

Expanding Club members’ respect for the environment can also be fun and exciting! Introduce nature focused arts and crafts or incorporate them in to cultural programs from your Club. When running a pottery program, first have the Club members take a nature walk collecting items found to create an interesting, long lasting textured stamp. Each member will have their own unique nature infused pottery!

These are just a few ideas you can use to recognize World Habitat Day, but don’t feel limited to just one day. There are many other activities you can run to encourage a form of respect from your Club members towards nature all year-round!

Don’t forget to share your World Habitat Day activities on social media using #NativeClubs!
