DIY STEM (Native Adaptation)

Do It Yourself (DIY) STEM is an activity-based program for 9- to 12 year olds to help them make connections between scientific principles and real-world applications. This program uses common items that Clubs may have on hand, or can procure easily to introduce youth to STEM concepts. The DIY STEM program can be implemented in its entirety or as separate units. Every unit details alignment to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and provides step-by-step instructions, facilitation tips and extension questions to ensure fun and learning.

Additionally, this DIY STEM Native Adaptation features history, achievements and current news related to STEM applications in Native culture to increase youth interest in activities and future career aspirations.

AmeriCorps VISTA Leader Application 2017-2018

We are pleased to announce the opportunity to apply for the Boys & Girls Clubs in Indian Country (BGCIC) AmeriCorps VISTA Leader position. We invite you to share this opportunity with past VISTAs or anyone else you may know who qualifies to serve as a VISTA Leader. Please note that VISTA Leaders must have completed at least 1 year of AmeriCorps service.

VISTA Leaders support and help coordinate larger VISTA projects in their efforts to address the needs of low-income communities. Leaders serve as recruiters, coordinators, trainers, mentors and resource providers who strengthen the capacity of VISTA members, VISTA projects, and community members. Just as VISTA members work to expand and build the capacity of community projects, Leaders work to expand and build the capacity of individual VISTA members and their respective project sites. VISTA Leaders serve different functions depending on the needs of the overall and local projects. These include recruiting and coordinating VISTA members, preparing VISTAs’ in-service training, mentoring, and identifying new funding sources.

BGCIC VISTA Leader Priority Areas:

  • Participate in professional development opportunities and connect them to the overall project.
  • Serve as a mentor and operate as a liaison for VISTA members to help facilitate a successful year of service.
  • Research funding sources and opportunities.
  • Support the Sponsoring Organization with monitoring and evaluating the overall project.
  • Develop an outreach strategy to increase awareness and knowledge of the project to all Native Boys & Girls Clubs.
  • Develop state and national marketing strategies to increase awareness of the project.
